Opened on 15 February 2002, this is a bright and airy, long and thin shop with young staff selling coffee of all types, snacks, soup and sandwiches. Comfy leather armchairs complement wooden high-backed chairs in an atmosphere of loud pop music. Most of the modern furniture is coloured a shade of brown, the corporate colour, and the walls have a selection of stylistic photo montages, over-printed with positioning statements ("Wake up and smell the coffee"). Papers and magazines are available for browsing and there is a large no-smoking area. Choose to drink in and you'll get your coffee (we tried cappuccino, it was great) in a chunky company-branded mug, but disappointingly served with a plastic spoon. Another disappointment was the lack of hot chocolate despite visiting on only its second day of opening. Visit the cashpoint first - our order of 2 cappuccinos, a cookie and a chocolate fudge brownie (a small cake) came to £6.10. Coffee Republic is on the High Street near its junction with Queen Street, opposite Boots.
